"Several years ago I developed a training method I call the extended taper. I started out by buying a stupid book about how to make you faster. It had this insane training program, with double sessions and high hard mileage. I struggled to follow the routine for an entire summer intending to explode onto the fall racing scene. First race was in the beginning of September where I ran slightly slower than the year before. Completely discouraged I stopped running entirely, however I still was signed up for several more races. At each of those races I ran faster and faster with my best time coming a full two months after no training at all. This being hugely successful, I decided that I had hit upon the secret and did no training for the rest of the winter, thus the extended taper was born. I did find that this led to the extended stomach as my food consumption was not on taper. There is a limit to how far you can extend the taper as eventually I gained 15 pounds and it took from March to September to get back in shape." - Coach Dave

When your body is trying to tell you something, Ignore it.
If your feeling like you just need a rest, get over it and suck it up.
Aches and pains are normal, run through it.
If something just doesn't feel right, don't think about it.
There is no such thing as over training, it's a word frequently used by lazy underperforming athletes.
Those days when you feel like your body is breaking down, this is when you push harder.
Lack of sleep is no excuse for a crappy workout, there will be plenty of time for sleep someday.
When you feel like you need a day off, you don't. What you need is an attitude adjustment.
If you are being told not to run, do not listen. This includes doctors, mothers and friends.
Never listen to doctors, this is frequently the advice of lazy non athletic people who clearly read too much.
Running gear is not important, time spent shopping is time that could be used training. If your shoes have been performing well for 1,000 miles why mess with it.
Never use the "recovery" excuse after a race. Your body will be fine, trust me. Train harder.
Hydration and nutrition are luxuries, hunger and thirst will motivate you to train harder.

Peter Gibbons: Eight bosses.
Bob Slydell: Eight?
Peter Gibbons: Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled; that, and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired. - from the movie Office Space
